Sir Alex Ferguson has backed Wales to beat Portugal in the semi-finals of Euro 2016.

Chris Coleman's side face Cristiano Ronaldo and co on Wednesday evening for a place in the final after a memorable tournament so far.

Victories over Slovakia and Russia in the group stage meant the Welsh topped their group, before beating Northern Ireland in the last 16 and producing one of the performances of the tournament to topple Belgium in the quarters.

Sir Alex believes Gareth Bale and his teammates have been the story of the competition, and says 'the story has not ended' ahead of their clash with Portugal.

"It's been the story. It's made the European Championships," he told the BBC.

"But because it's on our island, Wales' story is fantastic. No one could have made that, I'll tell you. The best film director in the world couldn't have fashioned what's happened. They have been absolutely magnificent.

"In the game against Belgium I had a slight feeling they could win it, but when they lost the first goal you're saying, it's a challenge. But from then on they absolutely outplayed them.

"The confidence they had on the ball, the belief in making sure they played football, it was absolutely brilliant. And they deserved to win that game.

"Now they're into the semi-final - the story has not ended. They could beat Portugal, I don't think there is any doubt about that. I think the manager has done a fantastic job, I really do."
