GRATEFUL: Kane says Hodgson's helped him grow as a player

The England and Tottenham striker has looked far from his best and failed to score at the tournament.

Hodgson and his players know defeat to minnows Iceland in the last 16 on Monday will spell the end of the 68-year-old’s four-and-half-year reign as boss.

And Kane wants to do his bit to make sure that doesn’t happen.

"He’s been a fantastic coach for me, a fantastic manager,” said Kane, who was given his England debut by Hodgson 15 months ago.

"I’ve learned a lot from him. We’re doing our best for the team, for him and for our country.

"That’s all we can do. You can’t do more. Everything I’ve learned from him has helped in my career.”

FA chairman Greg Dyke cranked up the pressure on Hodgson last week when he said the boss would have to go if the Three Lions failed to make the quarter-finals.

"It’s not down to us - it’s not our decision to make,” added Kane.

"It’s something the FA will decide, whether we go out of the tournament or win it.

"We have to focus on our jobs, play for the manager who is there now. That’s all we can do.”

Hodgson was fuming at Dyke’s timing, with the FA Chairman angry at what he saw as too many changes for the 0-0 draw against Slovakia five days ago.

Hodgson also left out Kane, Dele Alli, Raheem Sterling and full backs Kyle Walker and Danny Rose.

Rooney, Kane and Alli all came on as subs against Slovakia, but Hodgson, but the impressive Spurs of pair Walker and Rose were left on the bench.

They are not sure if they will be recalled for the Iceland game, and if they are they are understood to be very concerned about what they see as an unnecessary 11-day break between games.

Despite the uncertainty, Walker and Rose are expected to return with Hodgson planning to field the same team as against Russia in the opening match, apart from Daniel Sturridge replacing Raheem Sterling.

That means no place for Jamie Vardy although he could be vying for a call-up if Adam Lallana is ruled out.

The Liverpool man picked up a knock in training yesterday but is expected to be okay to resume today.
