Injured Luka Modric is not being ruled out by coach Ante Cacic for Croatia's final Group D Euro 2016 game against holders Spain.

Modric limped off in the second half of Croatia's 2-2 draw with the Czech Republic and it was feared he would not recover in time for Tuesday's match but Cacic is not ruling him out.

"He underwent an MRI and there was no rupture of the muscle, but I will make a decision tomorrow [Tuesday] or after this evening's practice session," Cacic said.

"He is a really important player for me and for my team. It will be special if he can play."

Croatia are not guaranteed a berth in the knockout stages but are likely to advance as one of the best third-place teams even if they lose Tuesday's game against the two-time defending champions, who have already secured a spot in the last 16.

Ante Cacic is hopeful of Modric's return

Croatia need a draw to guarantee second place in the group, while a win in Bordeaux would allow them to advance as the group winner.

Cacic's side has four points, two fewer than Spain and three more than the Czech Republic. Turkey have no points.

Croatia were leading 2-0 in Friday's match and began to struggle in the game against the Czechs right after Modric had to be substituted in the 62nd minute, eventually relinquishing the lead to miss the chance of clinching a spot in the next round.

Mateo Kovacic confirms Modric is Croatia's best player

Modric had scored Croatia's winner in the opening match against Turkey with a remarkable long-range volley.

"Luka Modric is certainly our best player," said his Real Madrid team-mate Mateo Kovacic. "Without him we lack rhythm. He gives continuity to our game and it will certainly be difficult if he doesn't play."

Midfielder Ivan Perisic added: "Maybe it's better that he is not taking risks against Spain so he can rest a little bit because we will needed him for the next games.

"He is a player with a lot of experience. He has played a lot of important matches."
