7M View: Germany Target Euro Glory

Saturday, June 11, 2016 Source: 7M Sport

With a solid 2-0 win over Hungary, Germany finally grabbed a victory in their last friendly ahead of UEFA Euro 2016. Over the past decade, Germany's performance in big tournaments is very stable. They all managed to make at least into the semi-finals, no matter in the World Cups or in the Euros. And in 2014 Brazil World Cup, they eventually lifted the trophy. As for the European Championship, Germany can be referred to as the most successful team in this tournament. They got into the finals for a record 6 times and lifted the Delaunay Cup in 3 of them. With such impressive performances in big events, Germany for sure are deemed by most bookmakers as one of the biggest favorites in the Euro 2016, along side with the hosts France. So can Germany continue their glory in 2014 World Cup?

Powerful Midfield

Germany's squad in the midfield can be described as luxurious. Although Marco Reus is ruled out of this event due to injury, the German side still have many players to replace his position. Thomas Muller just has a most prolific season in his career with Bayern Munich, scoring 20 goals in the Bundesliga. He certainly wants to continue his good form in this Euro. Mario Gotze, on the other hand, does not get many chances to play for Bayern under Pep Guardiola. But in the national team, he gets the trust from Joachim Low and often starts for Germany. Moreover, he is the hero when he scored the winning goal for Germany in the 2014 World Cup final. So he is determined to prove himself in the Euro 2016. The key players in midfield are Toni Kroos and Mesut Ozil. Kroos is the playmaker for Real Madrid and helps Los Merengues claim their 11th Champions League title in the 2015-16 season. As for Ozil, he provides the most assists in the 2015-16 Premier League. He is ready to create scoring chances for Mario Gomez, who is the top scorer in Turkish Super Lig of last season. As a result, the powerful midfield is the crucial factor if Germany want to leave a mark in this Euro.

Shortage of Full-backs and Injury Setback in Defense

Compared to their sufficient reserve in midfield, Germany's squad in defensive end is not so reliable. Since Philipp Lahm quitted the national team after the 2014 World Cup, Joachim Low has been seeking an eligible replacement in right full-back position. However, no matter Emre Can or Shkodran Mustafi, they both can not impress Low in the friendlies. According to reports, Low has no choice but to appoint Benedikt Howedes as right full-back in this Euro.

In the center back position, Germany suffer injury setback in this week, with Antonio Rudiger being ruled out of this event after damaging his ligament in training. Low decides to call up Jonathan Tah to replace Rudiger. Although Tah has a good season with Bayer Leverkusen, his lack of experience in big games may be his weakness. What is worse, Mats Hummels may miss the first two group matches for Germany. Therefore Germany's defensive line is not so trustworthy. It lies on the performance of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer if Germany want to go further in this tournament.

Germany's Fixtures

Germany go into Group C in Euro 2016, together with Poland, Ukraine and Northern Ireland. It is obvious that Poland are the most powerful rival for the German side, considering Poland have beaten Germany 2-0 in the qualifiers. Poland's superstar Robert Lewandowski may cause much trouble to Germany's defense, and he is quite familiar with Germany's play style as he is now playing for Bayern Munich. So how to contain Lewandowski is a problem to be solved by Low. As for the other two rivals, Ukraine and Northern Ireland, it seems that they are the underdogs in this group. However, they can not be underestimated, or Germany may pay the price. When it comes to the knock-out stage, luck also plays an important role in this kind of event. Can Germany replicate their glory in 2014 World Cup? Let's wait and see.
