HIT OUT: Rooney slammed his critics

The England captain was told by a Russian journalist last night that the feeling in his country was that Rooney wasn't the player he used to be.

But ahead of the Euro opener between the two countries, Rooney insisted: "I'm aware my game has changed - but in my opinion it has changed for the better.

"Everyone wants an opinion, but I know my qualities. I don't have to sit here and defend myself.

"The opinions that matter are those of my coach and my team-mates. In the last few months I have played in midfield for Manchester United and I think I can further my career there.

"My favourite position is on the pitch! And my ambition here is to do as well as we can and try to win it.

"This could be a big tournament for England and this group of players. We are ready and excited.

"It's a big challenge, but I believe we can do well. My advice to the young players in the squad is to enjoy it."

England boss Roy Hodgson said: "We are ready to make an impact. We want to go as far as we can in this tournament.

"I'll name the team tomorrow, but I've got a selection headache I'm pleased about, because all 23 players are fit."
