England facing sleepless night ahead of Euro 2016 Russia clash

Roy Hodgson’s men will be stuck in a hotel right next door to the fan zone ahead of tomorrow night’s clash in Marseille

It means Wayne Rooney and co will have to go to bed just yards away from tens of thousands of boozing fans.

And their chances of a good night’s sleep are made even worse with the fanzone showing hosts France’s opening game against Romania from 9pm local time followed by a special one-night only Euro disco until 1am.

The news is a blow for Hodgson who has left no stone unturned in his preparations for the tournament.

It is far from ideal preparation for England’s players, who earlier this week were advised by team doctors not to visit a Somme battlefield memorial due to concerns the three-hour round trip would be too draining.

England’s squad are booked into the Golden Tulip Hotel - with opponents Russia staying in a superior one on the other side of the city, which will be far quieter.

The Golden Tulip has numerous negative reviews on TripAdvisor, with one describing it as a “poisoned apple in the heart of Marseille.”

The FA had no say over where the England squad stay on the eve of games during the tournament.

UEFA decide where teams sleep in the venue cities, but Hodgson and his staff are less than impressed with the location.

In 2014 Hodgson abandoned plans to stay in a hotel on the Copacabana in Rio for the World Cup.

He decided it was too close to the fanzone on the beach and was worried about the noise levels.

Now he is facing the same problem in a tournament that will decide his future - but there is nothing he can do about it this time.

The fanzone is also located in the hub of the security hotspot, with Marseille on red-alert, like the rest of France, due to the threat of terrorism.

England have spent the week so far being pampered in the luxury ‘Auberge du Jeu Paume hotel’ in Chantilly on the outskirts of Paris.

Armed police have been guarding it round the clock to keep out unwanted guests.

An FA spokesman said: “UEFA allocate the hotels for both teams in the host city.”

England will train in Chantilly this morning before flying to Marseille to complete their final preparations.
