Costel Pantilimon: Romania can shock France in Euro opener
Thursday, June 09, 2016 Source: Dailystar.co.ukRomania kick-off their Group A campaign with the curtain-raiser against hosts France at the Stade de France on Friday night.
And Watford goalkeeper Pantilimon wants to get the tournament off to the worst possible start by taking a leaf out Greece’s book.
The Greeks stunned Portugal on the opening night 12 years before going on to lift the trophy in one of the biggest shocks in football history.
“Everyone remembers what Greece did,” said Pantilimon. “Why can’t we do the same?
“I’m not saying we will win it like they did but we can surprise a few people who have not really mentioned us.
“It’s a great chance to showcase what we are all about.
“All the pressure will be on France as they are playing in front of their own fans.
“We can relax, try and frustrate them and then hopefully it could play into our hands.
“There will be a big audience watching and if you look down the years there’s been some surprise results in the first game.
“France will want to get the opening game over and come out with a win. It’s up to us to spoil the party.”
Romania boasted the meanest defence in Europe during qualification, conceding just two goals in their 10 games.
Anghel Iordanescu’s men will need to be at their best again to ensure the likes of Anthony Martial and Dimitri Payet suffer stage fright.
Former Mancherster City star Pantilimon will battle Ciprian Tatarusanu for the starting spot, and said: “We are in no doubt that France will be the toughest game of the lot.
“They have real quality throughout their team. But we have shown we are hard to break down.
“It’s important we stay united and remain resolute if we come under pressure.”
Romania’s players all famously dyed their hair blonde for the 1998 World Cup.
The peroxide look ensured few missed them but Romania now aim to slip under the radar in a group also featuring Switzerland and Albania.
Pantilimon, 29, added: “We don’t have top stars but we are well organised and disciplined.
“Anything can happen in this group - and a good start can go a long way in helping us achieve our aims.”
