England boss Roy Hodgson's Euro 2016 problem: Marcus Rashford and Daniel Sturridge?

Marcus Rashford made his England debut in last night's 2-1 win over Australia in Sunderland

Raheem Sterling and Jordan Henderson both hailed Manchester United’s teenage sensation as ready to continue his Premier League heroics in France.

And the man who could miss out if Rashford is picked to go to Euro 2016 is Daniel Sturridge who has undeniable talent but missed England's clash with Australia with a calf injury.

In fact that decision could be taken out of the England boss' hands if the Liverpool striker fails to recover in time to train on Monday.

As Rashford waits to see if he can cap his meteoric rise with a place in Hodgson’s squad, Sterling and Henderson were united in giving him the thumbs-up.

Henderson said: “I think he’s ready. He was brilliant for a young lad making his debut against Australia. There was a lot of pressure on him but he took his chance well.

"He’s got everything in his locker, has done it in the Premier League – and he’s only 18.

"He has looked very mature, playing with no fear and hopefully he will continue to do that.”

Sterling, who combined with Rashford for both of England’s goals in Friday’s 2-1 warm-up win, was fulsome in his praise for his new partner.

He said: “I’m really impressed with his finishing. He makes his decisions early and it was a real bonus for him playing and scoring against Australia.

"He’s a quality finisher and it was a good debut. Long may it continue. I’m really looking forward to playing and working with him for years.”

But Hodgson continued to keep his cards close to his chest despite admitting Rashford has now given him a serious selection headache.

He said: “Marcus was always seriously competing for a place and he has done his chances no harm. I now have a few sleepless nights churning things over.”

That only served to fuel the speculation as the England coach insisted that Daniel Sturridge, the one expected to lose out if Rashford gets the nod, is still “very much in the mix”.

Hodgson said: “People are deciding if it is either-or between Rashford and Sturridge and I don’t mind that.

"Nobody is giving more thought to the subject than we are but I have never said we can only have X number of forwards and that we must have this number of midfielders.

"I have said that we’ve robbed Peter to pay Paul in the sense of choosing only seven recognised defenders and Eric Dier up our sleeves. I still stand by that but when it comes to that body in front of that I have made no statements.

"They are all the things that have to go through our minds and we have to weigh them up.

"If I choose Sturridge it is because I am convinced he will handle situations and it is because I believe he will be able to help us come back from the tournament with good results.

"If I don’t choose him then you can speculate why, but you’ll have to wait!”

While Rashford made a positive mark on Friday’s game, it was a less successful night for key squad man Dier.

While Dier is fully expected to start against Russia in the holding midfield role, he also is Hodgson’s fourth centre-back option after the England boss only named Gary Cahill, Chris Smalling and John Stones in his squad.

But Spurs man's audition as defensive cover ended with him heading the ball into his own net.

"We wanted to give Eric a bit of a go at centre-back. After his goal tonight I’m tempted to give him a go at centre-forward in the next game,” joked Hodgson.
