Roy Hodgson says he would be happy to stay on as England manager after Euro 2016 in France

Roy Hodgson says he has no plans to quit as England manager after Euro 2016 this summer.

Hodgson, 68, is preparing to lead the national side into a third major tournament as manager and says he remains committed to the role.

The former Liverpool and Inter Milan boss took charge of England following Fabio Capello's abrupt exit prior to Euro 2012 in Ukraine and Poland.

And while England reached the quarter-finals under Hodgson at that tournament, they were then knocked out at the group stage of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

However, the Three Lions bounced back from that disappointment to win all of their qualifying matches for Euro 2016, and Hodgson says he is keen to remain as manager after this summer's tournament.

England have impressed many following a perfect qualifying campaign for Euro 2016 and a 3-2 victory over Germany earlier this year

"If they want me, it is as simple as that," he said.

"I think I have tried to say all along - and nothing has really changed - that if the FA want me, if the mood in the country is that they would like me to stay, then I of course am more than happy to stay.

"But I don't want to be clawing onto a job when I get the feeling that people don't want me to have the job, so it is as simple as that. I suppose that does comes down to what the Euros brings and see how we feel after it."

England's new-look side have impressed many, particularly after the 3-2 victory over world champions Germany in Berlin.

And Hodgson says is confident of his side's chances in France this summer but warned fans against overconfidence.

"I would like to think going forward and preparing for this one, it has put us in a slightly better position," Hodgson said. "But everything really depends on the night."

"It is a bit like rehearsals for a play. Rehearsals might have been fantastic, but if on the opening night everyone forgets their lines for the play, in some other ways, it is a disaster - that is where all the judgement is.

England were knocked out in the group stages of the World Cup in Brazil two years ago

"I don't think that the team and the group of players we have got now will, in any way, let myself, the coaching staff or the country down. I fully believe they will go there and do their utmost to perform at the level we have seen them perform at and think they can perform at.

"But of course I don't know about refereeing decisions, I don't know if Dele Alli's going to trip over and hit the post when he has just dribbled past four players. I don't know those type of things."

The FA are yet to renew Hodgson's contract and are likely to base their decision on England's performance in France this summer.

Former Valencia boss Gary Neville, who is one of England's assistant coaches, is one of the favourites to succeed Hodgson, should he fail to be offered a new contract.

Gary Neville is one of a number of potential successors to Hodgson as England manager

"I think that he would like to get into management, of course, but I think he'd also be happy if we stayed the same and not just jump at the first management job that comes his way," Hodgson said of Neville.

"He likes working for England very much, we have a very good relationship. We think the team behind the team is a good one in terms of the way we complement each other and the different ages and so on.

"You'd have to ask him, but at the moment I think he's quite happy to be back in England."
