Downbeat England squad depart France
2016-06-29 04:33:00 from:SNTVA chastened England team boarded their team coach in Chantilly and returned to the airport on Tuesday (28th June) after being dumped out of Euro 2016 by Iceland on Monday.
After a desperate departure from Euro 2016 for England it was pack your bags time.
The England squad had their possessions handled for them as they left their base in Chantilly for the last time.
It's now 10 knockout stage failures for England at major tournaments since their 1966 triumph.
For Roy Hodgson, his time is up after the 2-1 defeat to Iceland and he certainly sounded as if he'd had enough.
"I don't really know what I'm doing here, I thought my statement last night was sufficient. I'm no longer the England manager. My time here has been and gone, but I was told it was important for everybody that I appear. I guess that was partly because people are still smarting from our poor performance yesterday and the defeat which has seen us leave the tournament. I suppose someone has to stand and take the slings and arrows that come with it."
Roy Hodgson's record in his three tournaments for England makes for difficult reading. 2012 his best performance saw England reach the quarter-finals.
And for Hodgson, he too confessed he never saw defeat and perhaps more importantly, the performance coming....
"I don't think that before last night's game the performances had given me any real cause for concern other than the fact we weren't taking our chances."
So yet another England failure, and yet another time for answers as to why they continue to fail at major tournaments. When will it change?
