Wales loss a 'cruel way to exit' - O'Neill

2016-06-26 17:25:00 from:SNTV

Northern Ireland coach Michael O'Neill said it was "a very, very cruel way to lose the game", after his side lost 1-0 to fellow United Kingdom members Wales in the last 16 at Euro 2016 at the Parc des Princes in Paris on Saturday.
Wales' winner came in the 75th minute, courtesy of an own goal from West Bromwich Albion defender Gareth McAuley.

SOUNDBITE (English) Michael O'Neill, Northern Ireland head coach:
(on the game and Gareth McAuley's own goal in the 75th minute)
"I felt it was a very tight game. I thought we had the better of that, to be honest and it's just a very, very cruel way to lose the game, you know, I don't think we deserved to lose the game, certainly by that nature and at this minute in time, it's difficult to reflect on the tournament as a whole and I think we came into this, not many people gave us a chance of doing anything in the tournament, but we came within a whisker of getting to the last eight of the tournament, I don't think it would have been undeserved, if we had got that today, so it's very difficult to quantify and reflect on the tournament as a whole at this moment in time. The players have been tremendous, their effort and commitment, their pride in playing for their country and it's been a fantastic experience for everyone, but when it ends as it did today, it's very cruel and as I've said, I don't think we got what we deserved today."

SOUNDBITE (English) Michael O'Neill, Northern Ireland head coach:
(on how to counter the strengths of the Wales team)
"Yeah, listen, it's no secret. If you can stop Gareth Bale for Wales, then you're going to go a long way to making it difficult for them to win games and particularly if you can stop the two of them (Bale and Aaron Ramsey), and I think we did that extremely well today... You know, I wish Chris (Wales head coach Chris Coleman) well, he's a great lad, I'm pleased for him, you know, if I was going to go out of the tournament to anyone, you know, Chris is a... I regard him as a friend and a very good manager, I know what it means to him to be manager of his country, so I think Wales can go far, you know. I suppose the difficulty that they will have is when they play against teams like us that will maybe not allow them to counter-attack them and possibly sit a little bit deeper, I think Wales would probably prefer to play against a Belgium or a Hungary than perhaps ourselves, to be honest, so yeah, I think tactically we were fantastic today, what we worked on in a very short space (of time) to turn the team around, and what we did, we worked on, we implemented to the letter, to be honest. I thought Jonny Evans was magnificent against Bale, Corry Evans against Ramsey as well was fantastic and right through the team I thought we were very aggressive in terms of how we pressed at the right times, the shape of the team was excellent and it game us a platform to go and try to win the game."
