Hodgson talks goalscoring, six changes and penalties

England manager Roy Hodgson defended his team selection after they drew 0-0 with Slovakia in Euro 2016 on Monday (20th June), a result which saw them finish second in Group B with Slovakia almost certainly joining them in the last 16 as one of the four best third-placed teams.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roy Hodgson, England manager (Q: How much of a concern is goalscoring?):

"It's certainly very disappointing that once again we've had all of the play and had a lot of opportunities in and around the Slovakian box and we've not been able to take one. So of course I cannot deny that's both frustrating and disappointing, it's something that we'll have to continue to work on, but I believe it will come because we have players in the team who can score goals and will score goals."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roy Hodgson, England manager (Q: Was six changes a bit too much of a gamble?):

The six changes amuses me because we finished the game with Wales with Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy up front and everyone was saying that these were very positive changes, now suddenly they just become six because people want to start with (Raheem) Sterling and (Harry) Kane. So you can't have it all ways in that respect. It was a frustrating night and I thought that we fully deserved to win the game. I am very surprised in a tournament of this nature we can play three games and in each of the three games we've been the totally dominant team. We'll be criticised as a team for not taking our goal chances for having so much possession and not scoring goals, that's the way it goes. I cannot deny that and I can't say anything about that. All I could say is this - I think the time will come when we will take those goal chances and I think some team might be on the end of that fairly soon. But we will wait and see - we are in the knockout stage, which is what we wanted to be and we will have to try in the next game to make certain that we don't just control the game for long periods and pass the ball reasonably well, we have to try and score goals as well."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roy Hodgson, England manager (Q: Three matches and two draws, how are the penalties coming along?):

"They get taken every day so we'll wait and see. But penalties in training and penalties in front of a lot of people when it matters - that's two different things as we in England know. But first of all let's wait and see. We are not doomed yet, we are not doomed to penalties, we are not doomed not to score goals and take our chances. I believe we will, if the team continues playing with the intensity and the domination and control the games in that we've shown in these three games then I think we are capable of winning the game in normal time."
