Keane gives update on Walters fitness
2016-06-21 01:04:00 from:SNTVRepublic of Ireland assistant manager Roy Keane said on Monday (20th June) that his squad will need "courage and balls" to defeat Italy and give themselves a chance of making the last 16 at Euro 2016.
SOUNDBITE (English) Roy Keane, Republic of Ireland assistant manager (on the fitness of Jon Walters):
"We know the type of lad Jon is and I think if there's any chance that he thinks he can get through it he'll have a go. Even if we thought we could get Jon on the pitch for an hour, it'd be fantastic. But of course you have to look after the player's welfare. Ultimately you'd think if he crosses that line he's fit but if he doesn't feel right and the medical staff and the player himself, it's highly unlikely he'd be involved."
SOUNDBITE (English) Roy Keane, Republic of Ireland assistant manager (on what the Republic of Ireland need to do to beat Italy):
"At international level you've got to have players who are comfortable on the ball, that are comfortable in possession, who are brave and we need to see that against Italy. Courage, you need players with courage. And balls."
SOUNDBITE (English) Roy Keane, Republic of Ireland assistant manager (on the Italy team):
"I don't think tactically they'll change from their previous couple of games, just because of the way they're set up. I've seen them a number of times. (They're) well organised, they clearly love to defend, they've got good options. They don't necessarily like to pass it 800 times in the middle of the park. They will put you under pressure, they'll get it forward, obviously their wing backs will get forward, they're a big goal threat. I don't want to talk them up too much but they've got a bit of everything and that's why they're a good team. There's no real weaknesses, vast experience from the goalkeepers to the centre halves, (Daniele De) Rossi in midfield I really like, mentioned warriors, he's up there. Really good player. They'll have good options off the bench if they're going to rotate. We'll have to be at our very, very best but you know we have beaten Italy before, so it can be done."
