Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov accuses France of violating the Vienna Convention in its treatment of a group of travelling Russia fans at Euro 2016.

France violated "all commitments of the Vienna Convention" when police detained a group of travelling Russian fans, Foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said in a speech at the Russian State Duma on Wednesday.

"French authorities were obliged to inform our embassy or the consulate general in Marseille at that very moment when they carried out the detention, but this was not done," Lavrov said adding that he has already sent a demand to the French foreign minister "not to let similar violations happen again."

The police action follows violent clashes between Russia and England fans in Marseille ahead of their teams' European Championship opener, a 1-1 draw on Saturday night.
