Euro 2016:focus on Germany

2016-06-12 15:48:00 from:SNTV

Germany coach Jochaim Low says they're excited about getting their Euro 2016 campaign underway on Sunday when they face Ukraine at Stade Pierre-Mauroy.

The reigning world champions have never lost to Ukraine in five previous meetings, but their last match - an international friendly in 2011 - finished in a 3-3 draw.

SOUNDBITE: (German) Joachim Low, Germany head coach:
"This week we have analysed the Ukraine team. One of their strengths is that they are very dynamic. They're particularly strong. They can play at quite a high speed for 90 minutes. They have players, as we know, especially on the wings, like (Yehven) Konoplyanka that are very dangerous. That's what we have been talking about considering and concerning Ukraine."

While Jochaim Low's are among the tournament favourites, the Germany boss is aware their opening fixture may well prove difficult, having watched the hosts France struggle to get past Romania.

SOUNDBITE: (German) Joachim Low, Germany head coach (asked if he expects a difficult opening game like France and Switzerland):
"No. To me I am happy most of all. We've had two or three weeks preparation. Now I'm itching to get finally started. But I saw France against Romania yesterday we've seen what awaits us. There will be very physical games. The so-called underdogs are getting ever better in their defence, so it might get very difficult against these teams, especially in the group stage, but I'm happier from hour to hour. All of us are itching to get started."

Although Germany have reached six finals in 11 previous European Championship campaigns, the last of their three titles came 20 years ago. After facing Ukraine, Jochaim Low's side will meet Poland and then Northern Ireland in their remaining matches in Group C.
