EURO 2016: focus on Portugal

2016-05-19 11:41:00 from:SNTV

Portugal are strong favourites to progress from Group F at Euro 2016 with their hopes of winning their first major title resting on superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.

Portugal hold the unfortunate distinction of being the only team to lose a European Championships final on home soil, going down 1-0 to outsiders Greece in 2004.

They also came close to glory in 2012, going out to eventual winners Spain in the semi-finals on penalties.

But with Iceland, Austria and Hungary in their group in France 2016 many are already saying they'll have an easy start to the tournament.

Goalkeeper Eduardo isn't having any of it

SOUNDBITE: (English) Eduardo, Portugal goalkeeper (on whether Portugal are in an easy group):

"Ha, in the paper only. In the field, it's different. It's a European competition, it's the final phase so every game is important. There's no easy games in that stage so it will be hard but we are favourites in the group and we want to pass. It's going to be hard, of course, but we are ready for pass to group."

Coach Fernando Santos turned around their qualifying campaign to comfortably finish top ahead of Albania and Denmark

And no team with Cristiano Ronaldo can ever be ruled out but defender Vierinha says the favourites are obvious:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Vierinha, Portugal defender

(on who he thinks the favourites for Euro 2016 are):

"Germany, of course. They won the World Cup. You have France that play at home. You have Spain, always it's a tough country to beat. But I think at the moment on the days it's difficult to find a not strong team."

Portugal begin their campaign in Group F against Iceland in Saint-Etienne on 14th June
