At a press conference in Brussels on Thursday (12th May), Belgium coach Marc Wilmots named a 23-man squad for the 2016 European Championship in France.

"Vincent called me Friday to tell me the bad news. It's a pity for him. He is missing Euro 2016. It's a pity for the team, he is our leader, he won't be there. I think Vincent now has to concentrate on his recovery and his health and try to return to playing as soon as possible for Manchester City. I think that's what he wants too. Of course, he will keep giving us his maximum support and might be present at the matches, but it is, of course, a shame he won't be there. But we have to live with it. We're not going to weep over it. We're looking ahead. He won't be there, somebody else will take his place and we will do our best to succeed."

"I want to say that I am giving the position of number 10 to Kevin De Bruyne who has specific qualities, but the same time it would be dangerous to take 2 (like him). Why? Because I see Origi and Carrasco on the right. I want speed and depth and not for them to call for the ball at their feet. So on the right I need people who are going to go deep. Kevin is the perfect man to able to give those balls and I can even see Kevin dropping back further allowing us to play with an extra striker. So at the tactical level and given the length of the tournament I think it is essential to have 3 strikers up front that have 3 different profiles."
