Euro 2016: Focus on Wales

2016-05-12 14:29:00 from:SNTV

Wales manager Chris Coleman says it would be pointless beating England if they were not to get out of Group B at Euro 2016, with the nation competing in its first major finals since the 1958 World Cup

SOUNDBITE: (English) Chris Coleman, Wales manager:

(on hopes for Euro 2016):

"We're always conscious that when we're representing Wales, we're actually...there's a lot of younger players coming up through our system who are looking at us, looking at the first team, and they need to see how things are done and what it means to play for Wales, and that's the message we give to the players. It's another game, it's another challenge, it's another opportunity to show people what it means to us, and we're pretty much setting a benchmark for what it takes to play for Wales and perform. So in the tournament we've got three games. We're going to need probably four points to get through. And is that possible? Absolutely. Is it difficult? Yes, but that's what we need to do and we're capable of doing that but we'll look at it. The first game is Slovakia and that's all we'll concentrate on, that's all we'll work on and we'll work on performing in that game, because we know if we perform properly, with the players and the team we've got, we can get results so it's kind of a process."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Chris Coleman, Wales manager:

(on guiding Wales to their first major finals since the 1958 World Cup):

"Playing for Wales - I was lucky enough to do that - and managing Wales - I'm lucky enough to do that - and having that honour, it's unbelievable and it's difficult to explain to people how that feels. And of course, the icing on the cake is actually doing something and achieving something which is, in my career it's my biggest achievement. It doesn't matter where I go afterwards, I'm not sure...yes, hopefully I'll be successful and achieve things but having that feeling walking off the pitch in Bosnia where we understood what we did, I'm not sure that can be topped, you know, so that was yeah, pretty amazing."
