Euro 2016: Focus on Lille

2016-05-12 14:26:00 from:SNTV

Profile of the innovative and modern Pierre Mauroy stadium in Lille, France - which will be one of the venues used for the rapidly-approaching Euro 2016 tournament.

The 50,000 seat Stade Pierre-Mauroy will be one of several showpiece stadiums to play host to Euro 2016, which gets under way in France in one months time.

Although not the biggest, the new home of three-time Ligue 1 champions Lille is perhaps the most innovative.

The multi-use stadium boss Gregory Delsalle explains why

SOUNDBITE: (French) Gregory Delsalle, head of Pierre Mauroy stadium:

"The specificity of the stadium that makes it unique in the world is what we call the 'boite a spectacles', the box for spectacles. Which is a box located under the half pitch in the north side. Half of the pitch can lift up to five meters and slide onto the second half of the pitch on the south."When you remove this part of the pitch you discover under the pitch a fourth level of tribunes and a scene and when you close the roof you can play every kind of spectacles such as indoor sports like basketball and handball, tennis or big shows concerts."

The Stade Pierre-Mauroy will host its first match on 12th June and will see Germany take on Ukraine in Group C.

It's host duties will climax on 1st July, when it serves as a venue for the quarter-finals.

The roof can close in 30 minutes and it also houses state of the art chancing room and shower facilities for the players

Event organisers are expecting a full house at Lille's newest stadium when it makes its Euro 2016 debut on 12th June.
