EURO 2016: focus on Albania

2016-05-12 14:24:00 from:SNTV

Euro 2016 will be Albania's first major tournament and captain Lorik Cana hopes they can spring more surprises in France where he plays for Ligue 1 side Nantes.

Euro 2016 may be Albania's first major tournament, but despite their lack of experience, confidence is high.

The Albanians will be hoping they can continue their impressive form that saw them qualify for the finals ahead of Denmark and Serbia.

And they will also be relying on their captain Lorik Cana's experience, he plays in Ligue 1 for Nantes

SOUNDBITE: (English) Lorik Cana, Albania captain:

"I've been lucky in my career to play in big clubs, in big leagues, like Paris, Marseille and the Premier League with Sunderland, Galatasaray, Lazio Rome. But I always dreamed to achieve something great with my country, especially when you wear that jersey, it's something different like when you play in your club. The emotions you have, the feelings you have when you win, it's a great thing. When you lose, you're really disappointed and like all the nation behind you"

For many years Albania were one of Europe's footballing minnows and many players born in he country chose to represent larger nations. But things are changing, more and more players are now choosing to play for Albania and success has soon followed.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Lorik Cana, Albania captain (on why there is such a strong spirit in the squad):

"We have half of the team coming from Kosovo, we have a lot of players who were born in Switzerland, grew up in Switzerland or in Germany or in Italy, and they all choose to play for their nation and their roots and their origins so I think that's the biggest achievement of our national team."

After surprising their opponents during qualifying, Albania now aim to cause a shock at the Euros at the expense of their Group A opponents, France, Switzerland and Romania.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Lorik Cana, Albania captain:

"Well, we don't really have a specific target. It's not like we said that we're going to try to pass the group or to reach the quarter-finals. For us, it's already a great achievement to be here, part of the best. I think there is one thing that we should do and our goal is really to play in the same level and try to do the same thing we have been doing the last couple of years."

Albania first match is against Switzerland in Lens of the 11th June.
