Bale critical to Wales in Euro 2016

2016-05-11 15:28:00 from:SNTV

Wales manager Chris Coleman says it would be pointless beating England if they were not to get out of Group B at Euro 2016, with the nation competing in its first major finals since the 1958 World Cup.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Chris Coleman, Wales manager:

(on Gareth Bale):

"If you see him on the pitch he stands out, he's noisy. Not in what he says, it's in his actions. He's, as in the tackle, he's incredibly aggressive enough. He's greedy in terms of, not for himself but in terms of producing quality and he's demanding of himself. His standards then, he sets the level and the bar for everybody else to try to aspire to. He's a great player and you can't use that word 'great' lightly. People say, 'He's a great player, he's a great player', he is genuinely a great player and he's one of the best players in the world. And he plays for us Easy to work with but, like I say, because his standards are so high then that brings the best out of the rest of us, me included, to try and make sure that we recognise what we've got, we utilise it as best as we can. Hopefully we've been doing that. The tournament, for him, he'll take that in his stride. He's used to playing in high-pressured situations, the spotlight's on him every time he takes to the pitch. I think he actually likes that and that brings the best out of him so the tournament won't be a problem for Bale."

Wales begin their campaign against Slovakia in Bordeaux on 11th June before a crunch clash with England in Lens on the 16th.

Captain Ashley Williams says Bale is an important part of their team, but all players have to perform

SOUNDBITE: (English) Ashley Williams, Wales captain:

(on Gareth Bale):

"I think it's important that he plays well, which he has done to be honest. But at the same time, I do feel that it's important for the rest of the guys to be on top of their game as well because he can't do it on his own. He can be scoring goals but if we're letting them in at the other end we don't win so as a team really we've got to be on it."
