Euro 2016: Focus on Lyon

2016-05-11 15:25:00 from:SNTV

A look at the Stade de Lyon, which will host six games during the 2016 European Championship.

With a total of 59,186 seats, Le Grande Stade in Lyon is the third largest stadium in France.

Located in the commune of Decines-Charpieu, 10 kilometres east of the centre of Lyon, the recently constructed stadium staged its first game in January of this year, when tenants Olympique Lyonnais beat Troyes 4-1 in a French Ligue-1 match.

The stadium was due to be complete in 2014 but construction delays meant the work was only finished this year.

It is estimated that the cost of the project was between 400-450 million euros.

Valerie Fontaine is an official at the stadium and suggests that the stadium was modelled on English stadia infrastructure

SOUNDBITE: (English) Valerie Fontaine, Le Grande Stade official:

"The British influence comes basically from the architects who has made.... Wembley and (Arsenal's) the Emirates Stadium. So.... we're very close to the pitch, and we still keep the sound very, very loud and very intense.

Euro 2016 football will come to the stadium or the first time on 13th June, when Belgium take on Italy in Group E.

Three further group games will be held at Le Grande Stade.

The ground will also be the venue for a round of 16 match and the tournament's first semi-final on 6th July.

Six games will be played at the swanky new stadium in Lyon.
