With Europe on high alert, French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said that the deadly explosions in Brussels were a reminder that a "very high security level" would be required during this year's European Championship in France.

"The events that happened in the last few days in Belgium, the attacks committed this morning at the airport and in the metro in Brussels, tragically remind us the elevated threat level that France and its European partners are facing."

"Our position is to not give in to the terrorists and to ensure that this big sporting event can take place, as the COP21 took place, in a context where all the means are deployed by the state and the territorial collectivities, to provide safety for this big event. Our common will must lead us to be particularly vigilant, to constantly evaluate the risks and have the flexibility that would allow us to reconsider our position on such or such fan zone if needed, should be have some information about potential risks in these fan zones."
