Joachim Low criticises Republic of Ireland style of play after defeat
2015-10-10 11:47:00 from:SNTVSuggestedLeadIn: Reaction after the Republic of Ireland beat Germany 1-0 on Thursday night (8th October) to boost their hopes of qualifying for the Euro 2016 finals.
Script: SOUNDBITE: (German) Joachim Low, Germany head coach:
"Overall, we have to say that this was the most unnecessary defeat that we had to accept in the last few years. It was to be expected that Ireland would be defending with nine, sometimes even ten men getting behind the ball then try long hopeful balls in their attack. I think they had only one opportunity to score. Meanwhile we had a good many of those and we got punished for not converting them into goals."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Martin O'Neill, Republic of Ireland head coach:
"With the three substitutes, and as I said to you at the press conference before, I thought it this was going to be really important for us, and.... particularly when we had to play Stephen, Stephen Ward, at left back and I knew that he probably wouldn't last the game not having played for Burnley at all this season. So, and Robbie (Robert Brady) went into midfield. I thought that in the first half we gave away a bit too easily. I thought in the first half, I thought we.... I thought that we gave away possession a wee bit too easily. I thought that we were exceptionally brave in the second half to get on the ball, which is what I asked them to do and I thought they were fantastic about that. They showed great courage to get on the ball in tight situations and not panic, and I thought then we started to get more more into the game, even though we still had to withstand pressure from the Germans, possession in terms of that. But it was a fantastic effort and Shane (Long) comes on, just scores a wonderful goal for us and gave us something to hang on to."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Martin O'Neill, Republic of Ireland head coach (on Joachim Low's quotes about Ireland's style of play):
"I am not even sure that we kicked it a hundred times long. And I don't really think that at the end of the day.... He's (Joachim Low) just gone out, he's congratulated me, so anything that he's said in here has been totally different to what he said there before. He's won the World Cup, he's entitled to a fairly decent opinion about the game and.... and we were brilliant."
