It\'s what we deserve O\'Neill reacts to Northern Ireland qualification
2015-10-10 11:45:00 from:SNTVSuggestedLeadIn: Reaction after Northern Ireland beat Greece 3-1 on Thursday night (8th October) to seal their place at the Euro 2016 finals, which will be the nation's first appearance in a major tournament since the 1986 World Cup.
Script: SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael O'Neill, Northern Ireland head coach:
"The goal was magnificent, the first goal. I think Steven (Davis) wins it, feeds it into Corry (Evans), Corry does fantastic, feeds it back out to (Stuart) Dallas and it's a great ball in and Stephen finishes. So, I mean.... it's what we deserved, but we had to ride that little storm before half-time. Michael McGovern makes an unbelievable save, the other one comes back off the post and, it caused us problems from set pieces, to be honest. We knew that.... we didn't maybe win enough of the first header(s) and we had a little bit of trouble off the corners from Greece. But second half I thought, as a manager you think, listen, you kind of envisage that you're maybe going to have to hang on, because the prize is so great. But the players' attitude to the game was phenomenal. They still took the game to Greece."
SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael O'Neill, Northern Ireland head coach:
"I probably should have enjoyed the second half a bit more. The supporters are singing for me to give them a wave. Personally I hate that. I never wave and as soon as I stuck my thumb up the Greeks scored. So, that will never ever happen again. And I just hate the idea of that, so it's just not in my make-up to be like that and.... what we saw again tonight was, I think all the good things that are in Northern Ireland. The potential.... the bond between the crowd and the team is really, really strong.... really strong, and that makes now playing at home a very special to play for the players."
