Wayne Rooney said he was "very nervous" before scoring the penalty against Switzerland that made him England's all-time record goalscorer.

Script: SOUNDBITE (English) Wayne Rooney, England's all-time leading goal scorer:

"Yeah it was... a great moment, obviously, to get the record tonight and at home, obviously at Wembley. An incredibly proud moment for me in my career and... I'm just delighted really."

Q: "I can only imagine the surge of adrenaline that went through you when the referee pointed to the spot and awarded a penalty. Did it hit you straight away?"

"Yeah. Obviously as soon as he gave the penalty, I went to get the ball and I tried to compose myself and, I was very nervous, obviously knowing what a big moment it was and... I knew which corner I was going (to shoot into) before the game if we got a penalty and, but I just, decided to put my foot through it. If the 'keeper' going to save it he's going to have to make a great save and thankfully the power on it beat him.

Q: "It's something that's going to live long in the memory for you, obviously. It must be one of those moments where you want time to stand still so you can sort of soak it all in at that moment."

"Yeah, it was, a great moment and it was a great moment with my team-mates when they all came around and, obviously they're all together celebrating the, they're all saying different things and..."

Q: "Such as?"

"A few different things. When I actually came back, James Milner actually said 'congratulations. Record goal scorer. Now get in midfield with me!' That was quite funny, but no, It was a great moment for me, my family and I'm just happy it's done."
