Northern Ireland leave it late to snatch draw

2015-09-09 11:12:00 from:SNTV

SuggestedLeadIn: Post-match reaction after Kyle Lafferty's stoppage-time equaliser earned Northern Ireland a 1-1 home draw against Hungary in their Group F European Championship qualifying match.

Script: SOUNDBITE (English) Bernd Storck, Hungary manager:

"At first I thought my team made a great job, especially in the second half. They can be proud about this, with all the difficulties that we had in the last two or three games."

SOUNDBITE (English) Bernd Storck, Hungary manager:

"In the last minutes, when they get the ball, Northern Ireland, from every position they kick the ball forward. And, in this moment we cannot keep the ball, we have to defend very well and we make it, but from this situation we got a corner. This is possible, every time it's possible. You can get (it) also every time from a standard situation, a goal, especially against Northern Ireland."

SUNDBITE (English) Michael O'Neill, Northern Ireland manager:

(on Chris Baird's sending-off for two bookable offences - the first of which he hadn't realised he'd received)

"Well I have to say, in my whole time in football, I've never seen a player booked twice in that situation. I mean, the referee said that Chris was booked for the first incident higher up the pitch. There's no doubt he should be booked for the second incident, but the player doesn't know he's been booked for the first incident, so if he knows he's been booked for the first incident, he won't make the tackle. So the referee, in playing advantage, he doesn't alert the player and tell him he's going to be booked for that, so I think it was a really, really unusual decision. I'm not going to pretend that I know the rules well enough to say whether it's legitimate or not, but I think that it was a very, very, very harsh decision. I mean, the number 20 (Hungary's Richard Guzmics)...well, it was apt that he had number 20 on his back because he had about 20 fouls throughout the night, you know. So I mean, if you're looking at repeat fouling and this type of thing, I just think that times...for a player to be sent-off for that is...it could cost us a place in the finals, that type of thing and I think that we need to look at that very closely. As I say, Chris apologised in the dressing room as he always would because he's a man, and he came forward. I thought the game, again, he had a magnificent game for us and it was just, I think, a really bizarre decision that ultimately could have cost us. But I think it's testament to the players' character and spirit that they didn't allow it to."

SOUNDBITE (English) Michael O'Neill, Northern Ireland manager:

"You know I think it's slightly unrealistic for us to be disappointed because we haven't qualified after 8 games. Let's be honest, I don't think Spain have qualified yet, so I think we'll be ok as long as we're still in the mix."
