Hodgson: \'Plenty of time to plan ahead of Euro 2016\'
2015-09-07 10:28:00 from:SNTVRoy Hodgson defended his decision to deprive Wayne Rooney of the chance to break Sir Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record in England's 6-0 win over San Marino on Saturday (September 5).

"The number of goals was far less important than that first goal. As it turned out, I got spoiled as well with a few extra goals and as you rightly say we are qualified. I don't think that it gives any particular advantage in being qualified early. We've got a lot of time to plan and to improve between now and June 2016 anyway. The only slight advantage it could give would be in the sense that the October games could give me the opportunity, if you like, for experimentation."

"That was planned. The team we put out today was planned with a view to choose the united. You will have noticed that some quite important players, some regular players for our team didn't start the game. And also you will also noticed that we took off some senior people, some regulars if you like, in the team. But that was planned. And also, it is nice, or it would be nice, if Wayne could get the 50th goal against Switzerland on Tuesday night. But one thing is for certain - he will get it. Tuesday would be nice and if it's not on Tuesday, it might be October, and if it's not October it might be in November and if it's not in November it might be 2016, but he will get it. It's not as if this was his last and only chance. I think perhaps if this was his last game for England and he needed one more goal to break the record I promise you I wouldn't have taken him off."
