De Gea trains with Spain a day after Madrid move collapse

SuggestedLeadIn: David De Gea trains with the Spain squad in Madrid on Wednesday (2nd September), on the eve of his national side's Euro 2016 qualification Group C game with leaders Slovakia and a day after his proposed move from Manchester United to Real Madrid collapsed.

Script: Spain face two potentially crucial Euro 2016 qualification matches over the next week - first they entertain Group C leaders Slovakia and three days later the defending champions take on Macedonia.

Vicente del Bosque's side were beaten 2-1 in Slovakia in October and currently lie three points behind Saturday's opponents and three ahead of Ukraine with four games to play.

Six points from those two fixtures would go a long way to securing automatic qualification for France 2016, but attention at their latest training session in Madrid was not on the outcome of two football matches, but all on goalkeeper David De Gea.

De Gea appeared set to join Real Madrid from Manchester United in the summer transfer window, only for the deal to fall apart at the last minute over documentation.

Both parties blamed each other for the fiasco, but for now De Gea and Manchester United could have a prolonged period repairing their relationship; the keeper hasn't be selected for any of United's game so far this season.

How this might reflect on his international career remains to be seen.

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has selected national captain and former Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas in Spain's last three qualifiers.
