Portugal were the better team - Santos

Reaction from Portugal manager Fernando Santos after Portugal book their place in the semi-finals of Euro 2016 with a 5-3 penalty win over Poland on Thursday.

SOUNDBITE: (Portuguese) Fernando Santos, Portugal manager (on the lottery of penalty shootouts and believing that Portugal can win the tournament)

"Well as we move further along, we are closer to our goal. We still have the drive and the ambition and we believe that it is possible. We want to bring great joy to the Portuguese people and we will try to do that. Penalty kicks are a lottery, but you have to be brave and you have to have strength of character. I knew that the Polish players were great at spot kicks because they won in the other round by penalty shootout, but I told my players that they could rest easy because I knew that we were going to score. I thought that we were very competant and that the goalkeeper was very competant because he saved a shot and also the players who took the shots, they scored. It didn't start out well for us, the game I mean. Poland started very well but I knew they would so I had an initial strategy where I had three players in the midfield. They were very strong players. I wanted them to be strictly midfield players because Poland play very well. (Robert) Lewandowski played very well and 11 is very fast but then it all came tumbling down because they scored early on and we let them take over the game for a bit and we weren't able to get any control but then after a while I thought that things weren't going our way so I called Renata to change something. I thought that Nani would be the second striker but also a link to the midfield and then things improved. We were lucky enough to have Renata score and the game evened out. It even went our way for a while and we were on top but Poland, Poland is a very special team. They know how to control every moment of the game and lull the opponent into a state of rest but I think we were able to be on top and minimise the damage. We wanted to take the game to them. We played up field, in their half of the pitch. I think we had clear chances, the better chances, even if Poland also had some shots on target. I think we won fair and square against a very good team. We had all our heart and all our skill and Pepe and Cristiano Ronaldo played amazing games."
