Loew: "We will have to improve"

2016-06-27 22:44:00 from:SNTV

Reaction from the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Villeneuve-d'Ascq, France after World Champions Germany set up a quarter-final clash with either European Champions Spain or Italy with a comfortable 3-0 win over Slovakia in the last 16 at Euro 2016.

SOUNDBITE: (German) Joachim Loew, Germany coach:

(on the game against Slovakia)

"Well, of course in the beginning, like many other sides, we've had our problems getting into the tournament, because in the group stage, there are a lot of tactics, you can qualify with three points. Today, overall we have shown a great effort in defence as well as in attack, but I think with all due respect to our opponents, this was not an indication that we will dominate this tournament. There are other sides with different strengths. We will have to improve if we want to win this tournament."

SOUNDBITE: (German) Joachim Loew, Germany coach:

(on Germany's possible quarter-final opponents, Italy or Spain and whether either side gives him sleepless nights)

"No, I'm sleeping well. Both sides can be considered among the favourites. Italy are incredibly strong in defence, they have a very good attack, as we have seen in their first two matches. In the third game (1-0 defeat by Republic of Ireland), they had six or seven (regular) players on the bench, so as not to demand too much of them. The Spanish have the best offensive game we have seen over the last few years, so the two sides differ, but they are top favourites."

SOUNDBITE: (Slovak) Jan Kozak, Slovakia coach:

(on Slovakia's tournament as a whole)

"Yes, you are right. Obviously, any defeat is painful, regardless of the opposition, but you know, we got beaten by Wales, then we beat Russia, we got a draw against England, so, you know, I think there's a good feeling that we got to the last sixteen and could also play against the World Champions. You know, within one month, twice against Germany, one win, one defeat. That's quite good."
