Portugal scraped into the knockout stages of Euro 2016 as one of the best third placed teams, with a 3-3 draw with Hungary on Wednesday (22nd June).

SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Fernando Santos, Portugal head coach (on Cristiano Ronaldo scoring two goals against Hungary)

"Cristiano (Ronaldo) is all about scoring. He needs to score because he is a winner and a scorer. He plays up front and he feeds on goals. I'm sure this increased his confidence levels. He's a determined and confident player but this will increase those levels for the next match against Croatia."

SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Fernando Santos, Portugal head coach (on not beating Hungary and finishing third)

"The statistics don't lie, the table doesn't lie. First, second, third and fourth place, that's mathematics. We have three points. We could have placed second but we placed third. But if you know something about football then you know Portugal played the better matches. This is not lack of respect for our opponents. I was the first one to congratulate the Hungarian coach on his matches. These are two different things. They are worthy players and I respect them. I have said this before, Hungary might be one of the biggest surprises and they have been. They are very well set up, very well structured. Hungary are a great team but that doesn't mean that I can't look at the match and think that Portugal were always on top. But we didn't win, we failed to win and mathematics is all about that."
