England manager Roy Hodgson on Thursday (23rd June) spoke about resting players and the prospect of his captain Wayne Rooney breaking England's outfield caps record.

"With the fullbacks it was a case of following what they do in their club side. Kyle Walker and Danny Rose don't often play three matches in a row in a week. At one stage they weren't even playing two matches a week because Mauricio Pochettino was rotating the two sets of fullbacks all the time. I thought that was a very obvious thing to do in that game. The two players you could say really got a rest were Dele Alli and Wayne Rooney and even they came on for 30, 25 minutes so they didn't get as much of a rest as we'd like. They should be that little bit fresher. The two front players that finished the game against Wales and the two that only played the first half against Russia have also had a bit of rest."

(on Wayne Rooney being one game away from reaching David Beckham's record for the most capped England outfield player):

115 caps for England, that's something really special. A lot of the players that get an enormous amount of caps for their country, they don't face as much competition for their place as an English player will always face. He must be delighted. To be on the same caps as David Beckham is something worth boasting about. I'm hoping he'll go on to get even more quite frankly. I'm sure David (Beckham) will too because David is constantly in touch with the boys, wishing them on. I think he'll be the first one to congratulate Wayne and wish him all the luck in the world to go and break the record."
