Iceland warn Austria of 'rather tough' match

Having captured the hearts of football fans at Euro 2016, and now finally Cristiano Ronaldo's jersey, Iceland's players are hoping to extend their stay in France.

With a dentist as a coach, a part-time film director in goal and only a couple of recognisable players in the squad, the underdogs of Iceland were always going to be the feel-good story of Euro 2016.

The smallest nation ever to compete in the Euros is showing though that there's a talented team behind the romantic story line.

And there's a real belief that the side could extend its stay in France beyond the group stage.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Aron Gunnarsson, Iceland captain: (On becoming the feel-good story of Euro 2016)

"That's not enough in our eyes, we want to go through, qualify and keep going. Everyone wants to stay here for another couple of weeks. If it's possible, happy days. The whole world likes an underdog, it's special to be a part of it."

After draws against Portugal and then Hungary, Iceland know a victory over Austria at the Stade de France on Wednesday will secure a place in the last 16.

Manager Lars Lagerback has warned Austria that they can expect a tough game.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Lars Lagerback, Iceland co-coach: (On the team's chances of progressing out of the group)

"I think the chance is there, It's always a realistic chance, but I think it's rather good. I think the Austria team are under bigger pressure, they probably had higher expectations inside the group and in Austria. We're going out there tomorrow and will try to enjoy it being in Paris, and show the real Icelandic attitude. I think Austria can expect a rather tough game."

Either way, its not a bad achievement for a country of barely 330,000 people appearing in its first major football tournament.
