Russia coach Leonid Slutski appeared to announce his resignation "I think after a type of tournament like this you need someone else to take charge of the national side for significant major competitions".

SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Leonid Slutski, Russia coach

"Well first and foremost I must apologise to the Russian supporters for our performances thus far, including tonight's game, be it the fans in the stadium tonight or those in front of their television sets didn't deserve this level of play so I am more than willing to take on board all of the responsibility because I had enough time to prepare for this competition, to find players and if we weren't able to succeed tonight I think we might be able to say maybe it is truly my mistake. So first and foremost I would like to say the following - I don't want you to focus too much on the players, individual players, let't talk about me and my responsibility."

SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Leonid Slutski, Russia coach (Q: Are you going to stay on in charge of the Russian national side?)

"I think after a type of tournament like this you need someone else to take charge of the national side for significant major competitions. It is going to be very important to develop football in Russia ."

SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Leonid Slutski, Russia coach (Q: That's your last competitive game before Russia hosts the World Cup in 2018, what can we expect from the hosts in two years time?)

"I don't think I am the person that should necessarilty field this question, but I think even with this slightly negative experience here, the players still were able to qualify for the tournament (Euro 2016) and that was quite tricky. I think that could ultimately be a positive experience. We will really analyse our mistakes, we'll take them on board and I think all of the players involved in the 23-man squad are going to play in the 2018 World Cup and we're going to try and take the positives out of this experience."
