N Ireland buoyant ahead of Germany clash

2016-06-21 07:01:00 from:SNTV

Northern Ireland prepared on Monday (20th June) for their final Group C match against world champions Germany at the Parc des Princes in Paris.

Germany in Paris, these were the games Northern Ireland's fans had long dreamed of.

Any kind of result for them on Tuesday and it should see Northern Ireland through to the last 16.

Michael O'Neill's side currently hold the best record of all six third placed teams in France, with the top four set to move into the last 16 of the tournament.

But with fixtures in other groups scheduled after Northern Ireland's final game, a point - or better three - would increase their chances of going through.

Yet captain Steven Davis knows they'll be in for a tough night against the World Champions.

SOUNDBITE (English) Steven Davis, Northern Ireland captain (on Germany):

"Yeah listen, they've got a lot of quality, a lot of rotation in midfield so it's going to be a big test for us. We know we're not going to dominate possession, they're going to have a lot of the ball. It's about choosing the right times to get pressure on the ball, knowing when to fill in the gaps, they try to pick pockets very well and get players into space. It's going to be a really good test for us and something that we're used to obviously in terms of going against the ball, it's something we've done well up until this point. We need to show that again tomorrow."

If results fall their way then Northern Ireland can leapfrog first placed Germany and Poland in second position.

Michael O'Neill said on the eve of the game that he was unconcerned with the various and complex permutations of securing qualification, and that the squad were focused on getting a result against Germany at the Parc des Princes.

SOUNDBITE (English) Michael O'Neill, Northern Ireland manager (on Germany):

"We believe that we can hurt Germany. We've proven in the past that we are a good counter attacking team and that's what we'll have to be if we're to create chances from the level of possession that we anticipate having. No team is flawless. There's no team that is flawless. I think Germany has proven that they have flaws as well, albeit that they're the strongest team I suppose and world champions. There has been a bit of change from two years when they won the World Cup."
