Marseille only blotch on peaceful Euros - French minister

2016-06-21 01:08:00 from:SNTV

French interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve said on Monday (20th June) that 557 arrests had been made for violent behaviour at Euro 2016

SOUNDBITE: (French) Bernard Cazeneuve, French interior minister:

"What we can observe today is that, with the exception of the first match in Marseille which led to violence in the city centre, the measures taken immediately after this match, in liaison with UEFA but especially with the countries from which these supporters were coming from, have enabled us to avoid new acts of violence, and new fights in the centres of the host cities from occurring again."

SOUNDBITE: (French) Bernard Cazeneuve, French interior minister:

"What are the measures we've taken? These are measures of great firmness. First, there have been 557 arrests of violent supporters, there have been 344 people put in police custody. At the end of these arrests, there have been very firm prison sentences for a certain number of violent supporters. And we've also made the decision to send back to their home country some supporters who were creating problems. It's been the case for 21 of them, who were ordered judicial deportation, and over ten of them were legally obliged to leave the country. I also asked that we take inadmissibility measures in the coming hours for those who have left and might be tempted to come back."
