Hodgson praises quality of England substitutes

2016-06-17 07:49:00 from:SNTV

England manager Roy Hodgson wasn't sure whether the decision to bring on Sturridge and Jamie Vardy at half-time was the finest double substitution of his career, but said "it's certainly my best double substitution of these Euros".

SOUNDBITE: (English) Roy Hodgson, England manager (Q: Is Jamie Vardy just continuing his season?):

"Good observation. He obviously has a lot of confidence. I had no hesitation in putting him on the field of play at half-time today. Harry (Kane) was looking a bit tired today I thought, during the course of the first half he's worked very, very hard, against Russia, he had a long season, so it's great that we have someone like Jamie Vardy to step into his shoes and also good that we have someone like Marcus Rashford and in particular Daniel Sturridge to come onto the field and also give us something different when we need a goal or we need to ask questions of a packed defence. Because today I don't know what...I am not a great statistics person and I don't even trust them, but it seemed to me throughout the 90 minutes we were on the ball so much and had to make decisions with the ball, it's good when you have a few players who can do something that little bit different around the penalty area, because it asks further questions of their defenders."
