Defeat 'a bitter pill to swallow' - Coleman

2016-06-17 07:48:00 from:SNTV

Wales manager Chris Coleman described Daniel Sturridge 92nd minute winner as "gut-wrenching" and "'a bitter pill to swallow" following his sides 2-1 defeat against England.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Chris Coleman, Wales manager (Q: Would you recognise that the best team won today and how would you assess your second half performance given the dominance England had then?)

"Would you be asking me that question if they hadn't scored in the last few seconds about dominance? No, I think the game...listen before we came into the game we were expecting to find it tough, of course we are. We're up against a tough team in England, a good team, I said that before the game, it was going to be a tough game for us. It was a tough game, but you can't tell me for us to lose it like that, you can't tell me that my players deserved that. I think their effort and courage were fantastic, we were playing against a top team, you've got to ride your luck a little bit. But I think in the main they had a lot of possession, we expected that. It wasn't like Wayne Hennessey pulled off save after save, so to lose it like that was gut-wrenching for the players and our supporters."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Chris Coleman, Wales manager (Q: What did you say to your players afterwards and how will you pick them up for what is a massive game?)

"We've got to get it out of our system, we'll be disappointed and the disappointment lasts, you can't take it away. But we can't take it into the next game you know. I think before we go into this tournament if you say it's all on the last game, if you get a result you're going to get through, we'd have to accept that. I think the disappointment is because we've won the first one, we were 1-0 up in the second one at half-time and then we lose it 2-1. And in the fashion we lost it was a bitter pill to swallow. You've got to get over it."
