Football fans handed prison sentences

2016-06-14 17:48:00 from:SNTV

Six football fans on Monday (13th June) were handed prison sentences following the violence that has marred the start of the European Championship in France.

SOUNDBITE (French) Henri Viguier, defence lawyer for French and British fans:

"I have the feeling that the sentences pronounced today, in general, are a consequence of the actual climate (of fear), since the beginning of the Euro (championship). We are living with fear, with risk etc. I think that, in another context, the sentences would have been totally different."

SOUNDBITE (French) Jean-Pierre (no surname given), uncle of David Palmieri, 29, French supporter sentenced to a year in prison:

"As you can see in this case and all those concerned in these events the maximum sentences were requested by prosecutors and the judge followed it. We can only ask questions about this. I'm not aware of the political problems this will cause. But we see well that our children are hostages of this situation."
