Fans clash in Lille

There was a minor clash in Lille on Sunday (12th June) ahead of the Euro 2016 Group C match between Germany and Ukraine.

Several dozen Germans briefly attacked Ukraine football fans in Lille on Sunday afternoon.

The German group set off from a bar at Lille train station before charging a bar where Ukrainians were drinking.

They threw chairs and exchanged punches before fleeing.

The incident lasted no longer than a minute or two.

The only visible police presence in the square was a French liaison officer accompanying two Ukrainian uniformed police officers, who were not attacked.

By the time a squad of riot police were deployed to the square, most of the attacking Germans had been able to flee or merge with the rest of the crowd.

However, two Germany fans were seen being detained after the clash.

It was unclear if the detention was connected to the scuffle.

Apart from this isolated incident, the situation ahead of the Euro 2016 match between Germany and Ukraine was calm, with thousands of Germans and hundreds of Ukraine fans enjoying the day peacefully, disturbed only by the occasional fall of rain.
