Intro:

Reaction after a short corner allows Shaun Maloney to score the only goal in an intense Euro 2016 qualifying win for Scotland over the Republic of Ireland.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Gordon Strachan, Scotland manager: (Q: Did you think this game would just come down to one goal?)

"I think I said before in the pressers (press conferences) earlier in the week that there was one goal deciding all the games up until tonight, out with Gibraltar. It's happened again. We did say that set-plays were going to be big and it's happened. As for a footballing spectacle, pure football, it wasn't that great. But as a spectacle of two groups of players not wanting to give an inch, it was mesmerising. How they wanted to jump higher than each other, run quicker, tackle harder. And the fans made it an occasion."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Martin O'Neill, Republic of Ireland manager: (Q: How do you feel this result leaves the group?)

"... That's us and Scotland on seven points each. In truth, I think that our own fate will be decided by what happens in the Aviva Stadium (in Dublin). We've got four of the next five games at home. We have come out of what I would consider a difficult time. We've played three away games and one at home and we've got seven points on the board. Scotland have joined us on that now in this minute. Poland obviously winning in Georgia have (taken the lead in Group D), I still think that Germany are the strongest team in the group. It's going to be tough but we're still there."
