There was a strong police presence in Belgrade before Serbia and Albania contested a Euro 2016 qualifier on Tuesday.

Emotions were high for Albania's first visit to Belgrade in 37 years after Kosovo's independence from Serbia in 2008.

However Serbia, backed by its powerful ally Russia, refuses to recognise this, causing strained relations with the territory's Albanian population.

The match itself was abandoned in the first half when an Albanian flag, superimposed onto a map of Kosovo, was flown over the pitch by what appeared to be a drone-cam.

Serbia striker Aleksander Mitrovic eventually grabbed the flag, prompting a melee involving numerous players.

Riot police then moved in when around a dozen fans invaded the pitch and players were ordered off by Premier League referee Martin Atkinson.
