The two giants of European football, who met in the final of Euro 2012, go head to head again in the last 16 in France.

The Azzurri lost 4-0 in that final four years ago in Kiev and Conte believes Spain, who are going for a record third European Championship in a row, are just as good as they ever were – even though many of their star names have retired.

The incoming Chelsea boss said: "We have great respect for Spain. For me they are one of the strongest teams in the world and the favourites for this European Championship.

"So we've worked, we've prepared, and we need to provide a response on the field.

"We know they are very strong, but we are not here to help them on their way. We need to pull off something extraordinary because, for this match, the ordinary is not enough. And I'm sure the boys are capable of doing that."

Italy started with impressive victories over Belgium and Sweden, guaranteeing them top spot in Group E.

But a defeat against Ireland, when they fielded a weakened team, has brought everyone down to earth ahead of today's clash in Lille.

Conte added: "For this tournament to be a success, we need to give everything in every game.

"If after that the opponent is stronger, then I will be the first to applaud. But I believe we can win if we give our best."

Italy captain and goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has scotched rumours he could retire after the tournament, insisting he wants to play in the World Cup in 2018.

He said: "When you play at this level, it is no longer the player who decides whether or not to continue, it's down to your technical and physical condition.

"In my head I'm going to play for two more years."

Buffon will be up against Alvaro Morata, the Spanish top scorer and Arsenal target who played alongside him at Juventus last season.

He said: "He's a good player and he's very young. But Spain is not just Morata – we need to be aware of every body."
