Gareth Bale: We knew it would be an “ugly” match against Northern Ireland
Sunday, June 26, 2016 Source: squawka.comWales eventually managed to prevail with a 1-0 victory to secure their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2016, with Northern Ireland defender Gareth McAuley inadvertently turning the Real Madrid superstar’s teasing cross into his own net.
Bale’s side are now through to the last eight of the tournament, and there is a growing feeling of belief amongst Chris Coleman’s side that they can go even further in the tournament.
As reported by UEFA’s official website, Bale said: “What can I say? We knew it was going to be an ugly match.
''No disrespect to Northern Ireland, they made it a really difficult match for us.
''We didn’t have much space but the team is the most important thing, and we knew one goal would nick it.”
Bale is undoubtedly Wales’ star asset, and the No.11 has been hugely impressive at Euro 2016 so far, scoring three goals in four games.
With his direct running and ability to score from free-kicks, Bale is a major threat to any side, but Wales are about far more than just the winger, with the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen and Ashley Williams often playing a key part in proceedings.
Wales are extremely well-organised and, given that they are in what is widely seen as the more favourable half of the draw, there is a chance that they could even reach the final.
The Dragons will face either Hungary or Belgium in the last eight, with the identity of their opponents to be discovered on Sunday night.
