Aron Gunnarsson: I’m a “big” Man United fan that’s why I wanted Ronaldo’s shirt
Saturday, June 18, 2016 Source: squawka.comIn their first game at a major tournament, Iceland achieved a shock 1-1 draw against Portugal on Tuesday.
Nani opened the scoring for Portgual in a dominant display, in which they attempted 26 shots, but Iceland defended resolutely.
Gunnarsson’s side then equalised in the second half, with a close-range volley from Birkir Bjarnason earning an historic point.
The aftermath of the game was dominated by the actions of Ronaldo, who had struggled over the 90 minutes, striking only 1/10 shots on target and winning 1/3 take-ons.
The Real Madrid superstar was in a sour mood on the final whistle, seemingly refusing to exchange jerseys with Gunnarsson before accusing his opponents of having a “small mentality”.
However, the Iceland captain has dismissed those claims, suggesting that Ronaldo wanted to hand his shirt over in the tunnel, rather than on the pitch.
As reported by FourFourTwo, Gunnarsson explained: “He wasn’t asking who I was. He’s not like that as a person, even though I don’t know him.
''I asked him for his shirt and he said ‘inside’. The rumours are not true.”
When asked which Hungary player he’d make a similar request to, Gunnarsson said: “Probably no-one as I got custard-pied last time!
''It’s something I wanted to do. I am a big Manchester United fan and he played for Manchester United so that’s why I wanted to change shirts with him.”
The Cardiff City midfielder did not receive an opportunity to play against the Red Devils in 2013/14, during the Welsh club’s only Premier League season.
