CAPTAIN FANTASTIC: Wayne Rooney

Rooney once again excelled in his new central midfield role, as England came from behind to steal all three points late on thanks to Daniel Sturridge.

And the Manchester United man said: "First half we did OK but have to move the ball quicker. The manager made some positive changes and it paid off for us.

"We kept the ball well and kept probing and got the goal in the end.

"We know as a group of players we are not just an 11-man team, we have a full squad here and it shows just what a good squad we have.

"It was a great feeling to win the game like we did, it will almost qualify us now and we have to win the game on Monday.

"It was a great win, but a fully deserved one."

Rooney was also full of delight for his Old Trafford teammate Marcus Rashford who came off of the bench.

He said: "Marcus will be delighted. I am really pleased for him.

"I think it was 112 days ago he made his debut for Manchester United and now he is playing on the biggest stage so I am really pleased for him."

Jamie Vardy's equaliser got England back into the game and the Leicester forward doesn't mind making cameo appearances off the bench.

He said: "Everyone wants to be a part of the starting line up but it is a team game, we are all in this together and when you come off the bench you want to make an impact and luckily I did today.

"We thought we were playing well. The message was simple - to carry on doing what we were doing and hopefully the goals would come and they did.

"We just want to take each game as it comes, we got the win today and hopefully we can win the next game."

Does Vardy think his goal has helped his cause for a starting place against Slovakia? "We will have to wait and see," he said.

"I will be trying my hardest in training and we will see in the next game."
