Belgium vs Italy - Belgium captain Eden Hazard expected to face Italy
Monday, June 13, 2016 Source: PABelgium playmaker Eden Hazard is expected to be fit for his country's Euro 2016 Group E opener against Italy on Monday.
The 25-year-old Chelsea winger, who is captaining his country in the absence of injured Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany, suffered a foot complaint in training on Friday.
However, Red Devils coach Marc Wilmots is confident the problem will not prevent Hazard from lining up against the Italians in Lyon.
"I don't think it is serious, just a knock." Wilmots told reporters.
Wilmots therefore has a fully-fit squad at his disposal after defender Thomas Vermaelen, who was considered a doubt last week, returned to training.
"Thomas has done well in training over the last days and is completely ready for the battle," Wilmots added. "He has no more problems."
Monday's clash sees two of Europe's heavyweights going head to head early in the tournament.
But Wilmots insists the encounter between the group favourites will not prove decisive.
"There will still be six points available," he added.
"At Euro 2000, Belgium won the first match against Sweden but was then eliminated after two defeats.
"I'm not calculating the permutations. I'm looking at the situation game by game and even if I need only settle for a draw later on, I will always want to win. I know my players will do everything to achieve that too "
Wolmots' men will come up against a formidable Italian defence almost entirely made in Turin.
Boss Antonio Conte will is set to pick Juventus trio Leonardo Bonucci, Andrea Barzagli and Giorgio Chiellini in front of veteran Juve keeper Gianluigi Buffon.
"It's definitely an advantage to be able to rely on four players from Juventus who have played together for a long time in defence, and of course we are building something solid on this basis," Conte told UEFA.com.
"But as I said before, I like to adopt a proactive style of play and for this, balance will be important, both in attacking and defending."
Conte is expected to pair Southampton striker Graziano Pelle with Inter Milan forward Eder in attack as they bid to get their campaign off to a winning start.
