Collina analyses contentious moves ahead of Euros

Pierluigi Collina, UEFA's chief refereeing officer, met with the managers of the 24 teams set to do battle in the European Championship in Paris. He talked about the guidelines which will be followed in the tournament, emphasising fair play and the fact that tackles from behind and elbows will be punished heavily.

The Italian showed videos of pieces of play which may lead to contention. Two of them generated significant debate among the managers.

Using the example from Villarreal and Napoli's Europa League clash, Collina introduced the incident where a player slides in to cut out the ball in the area and it ends up hitting their arm as they drag it along the ground. The verdict is that this does not warrant a penalty, unless the player makes a clearly unnatural movement with their arm to try to make contact with the ball.

The issue which produced the greatest discussion among the managers was when a team taking a free-kick places a player behind the wall. Collina asked the managers for their views so that a decision can be made which both officials and managers are happy with. The debate surrounded the position taken up by the player and his influence on the keeper. The majority of managers believe it should be flagged as an offside.
