Slovenia 1 - 1 Lithuania : Slovenia pegged back by Lithuania

Friday, October 09, 2015 Source: PA

Slovenia drew 1-1 with Lithuania to leave their hopes of reaching Euro 2016 resting on the play-offs.

After Valter Birsa's first-half goal, they looked on their way to securing a victory that would have kept second-placed Switzerland just within reach in Group E.

However, Arvydas Novikovas equalised with just minutes remaining to rescue a point for visitors Lithuania.

Slovenia can afford to lose at San Marino on Monday if Estonia fail to beat Switzerland, but victory for their fourth-placed rivals will leave them needing a minimum of a point to secure third.

The organised Lithuanians did well to restrict the hosts' goalscoring chances throughout a largely uneventful first half, in which Slovenia gradually forced their opponents' defence deeper but failed to create clear goalscoring chances.

In first-half stoppage time, however, the crucial breakthrough they appeared to need was gifted to them when Marius Zaliukas fouled the lively Jasmin Kurtic inside the area.

Sending Lithuania goalkeeper Emilijus Zubas the wrong way with a strike into the bottom left corner, Birsa gave Slovenia the lead and the confidence to pursue the additional goal that would have secured victory.

They continued to dominate - Dejan Lazarevic came close when shooting just over the bar from the edge of the area and Robert Beric forced a fine save from Zubas - but a goal from open play continued to elude them.

With four minutes of normal time remaining, Branko Ilic then gave away a penalty by fouling Lithuania's Novikovas, who powerfully scored beyond Samir Handanovic and Lithuania held on to draw.
